When staring out into the endless blue sky over our heads it often looks limitless an infinite separation that seems to go on forever. But have you ever found yourself questioning where the sky ends and space begins? This has been a question for many thousands of generations. At first glance it can be assumed that there is no definite separation from the sky to space and it just goes from blue to black at higher altitudes. Science says it has an exact answer. Earth’s atmosphere does not just stop. It gradually thins until reaching the vast vacuum of space. To give some sort of defined boundary scientists have identified a certain altitude known as the Kármán Line that is the world standard for a point of separation from the Earth’s atmosphere and outer space. What is this magical boundary that separates Earth from space? According to the Britannica report the Kármán line is the boundary separating Earth’s atmosphere and outer space. The Kármán Line is regarded as the formal boundary of outer space and is approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) above the mean sea level as reported by ABPLIVE. Higher than this height the air is so thin that it is no longer possible for an airplane to create lift with its wings. In other words above this height the influence of the Earths atmosphere nearly dissipates — this represents the actual beginning of space. Where is the boundary between Earth and outer space located? This line was named for the famous Hungarian engineer and scientist Theodore von Kármán. In the 1950s he reasoned that at about 100 kilometers above the Earth aerodynamic flight is not possible because the air is insufficiently dense or thin to produce lift. This boundary has since become known internationally as the Kármán Line and is the standard boundary the scientific community has chosen to define where outer space begins. Nevertheless not all organizations are in consensus on where the boundary lies. The U.S. Air Force for example states that any person who travels to an altitude of 80 kilometers (50 miles) above the Earth is an astronaut. NASA and many other organizations throughout the world consider 100 kilometers (62 miles) — the Kármán Line — to be the true boundary of space. When traveling to space altitude is not the only consideration. Once you reach space gravity may weaken air will disappear and temperature can vary widely making an individual quickly aware that one is in a different environment. At this height objects begin to float in a microgravity environment referred to as zero gravity. Rockets and satellites that travel beyond this line follow entirely different physical rules. Satellites orbiting Earth all start from this altitude and can reach thousands of kilometers into space. This region is considered extremely important for science weather forecasting navigation and space research.
