New Delhi: The weakest country of Asia in terms of military and other similar set-ups that we are talking about is Bhutan which is a mixed monarchy. This country located between India and China is considered a unique example of environmental protection. People live a happy life as there is almost no crime in this country. Most people follow Buddhism.
A landlocked country
Bhutan is a landlocked country which means it does not have its own maritime border. Due to this it has not kept a Navy either. This country does not even have its own Air Force. There is only the Royal Bhutanese Army with only 7 thousand soldiers. Its job is to protect the borders of the country. There is a Royal Bodyguard for the security of the royal family whose number is around 2000. Apart from this there are a thousand volunteer militia.
No heavy weaponry
Bhutans army is very small. It does not have any heavy tanks cannons fighter jets or advanced missile systems. The army soldiers are seen with weapons like INSAS rifles AK-47 rifles pistols and machine guns. Apart from this there are wheeled armoured personnel carriers provided by India. Overall the military capability is defensive not offensive.
Dependent on Indias Eastern Air Command
Bhutan does not have its own Air Force. It is completely dependent on Indias Eastern Air Command for air defence medical evacuation and helicopter assistance. The Indian Air Force keeps helping Bhutan by conducting regular air operations here.
Who is responsible for Bhutans security?
Bhutan does not have its own navy or air force and its army is also small. Despite this it has stood up as an independent country with help from India. According to the India-Bhutan Friendship Treaty of 1949 India is responsible for Bhutans external security air defence military training and arms supply. In other words any attack on Bhutan will be considered an attack on India. This is the reason why China which has usurped Tibet does not dare to enter Bhutan.
Bhutan-India friendship
India has always stood ready to help its friend Bhutan. In 2017 when the Chinese army tried to forcibly build a road in Doklam Bhutan Indian forces gathered and stopped it. India has developed roads bridges and communication networks in Bhutan which has made rapid movement in Bhutan easier. Indias intelligence agencies keep sharing information on terrorism insurgency and cross-border infiltration with Bhutan. Indias regional military power provides it with a strong security shield against China.
