Taking that risk can sometimes lead to unexpected opportunities. This is what happened with Bengaluru-based entrepreneur Dilip Kumar, who sent a message in 2018 that became the turning point in his career. That single cold email led to a professional relationship with Zerodha co-founder Nithin Kamath and his wife Seema Patil. He is now leading health investments at Rainmatter, a venture by Zerodha. Kumar recently revisited that moment on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a screenshot of his old email thread with Kamath and Patil. A Cold Email That Changed Everything In his post, Kumar attached a short but impactful caption: “The cold email that got my first investor and my current boss. Every relationship starts with someone taking the risk to reach out first. You’re one good cold email away from changing your trajectory. If you write it like you mean it.” The screenshot he shared showed friendly and engaging exchanges with Kamath and Patil. One user commented, “You are one email from changing your life.” Another wrote, “It’s inspiring how a simple cold email can open doors to valuable relationships. Taking that first step really pays off in the end!” A person pointed out, “It’s actually not a risk to reach out… risk is illusionary in the mind of feeling embarrassed of the other side not responding.” “The cold email that led to running with this legend. Be the one to make the first move,” someone else remarked. “Try to reach out at every moment to connect more,” read another comment. A 19-Year-Old’s Cold Email To Jeff Bezos Earlier, another story from Bengaluru had caught attention for a similar reason. Ashish Jha, a tech enthusiast, shared how, at just 19 years old, he had also taken a bold step that would shape his professional life. Back in 2017, Jha created an Alexa skill that gained several users but to his disappointment, it did not win an Echo device in an Amazon contest. Rather than let the moment pass, he decided to go straight to the top and sent a cold email directly to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. When I was 19, I cold emailed @JeffBezos, after I was pissed that my Alexa skill didn't win an echo device for getting a lot of users. That single message turned out to be a life-changing one. The email not only reached Amazon’s senior leadership but also prompted a response from within the company. It eventually opened doors for Jha to connect with the team behind Alexa and explore new opportunities.
