The White Lotus creator wants Sydney Sweeney to return for season four

The White Lotus creator Mike White has revealed he’d love Sydney Sweeney to reprise her role as Olivia in season four of the show. Sweeney starred in the very first season of White’s satirical take on a luxury hotel chain and the wealthy guests that vacation there. She played Olivia, a privileged college student and member of the Mossbacher family who stayed at the hotel’s Maui resort. Speaking to Variety for a profile on Sweeney, White said he’d love for the Anyone But You actress to reprise her role in the fourth season, which is reported to be set in France. “I don’t know if we could afford her now,” White said adding, “As of now, it doesn’t look like that’s gonna happen.” White also recalled his first impressions of the Christy star from when she auditioned for Olivia. The role was originally written as “an intellectually pretentious bully,” but he said Sweeney went in a different direction during auditions. “There was just something very unaffected by her. She was very likable. And I thought that that would be helpful because the part is so unlikable on the page,” White told Variety. Across three season of The White Lotus, only three characters have reprised their roles in more than one series. The most notable, of course, being Jennifer Coolidge as the tragic Tanya McQuoid. Like Sweeney’s Olivia, she debuted in season one, before returning in season two where she sadly met her end, but not before delivering her iconic line: “These gays, they’re trying to murder me.” Tanya is also linked to the other two returning characters. There’s Belinda Lindsey (Natasha Rothwell), season one’s hotel’s spa manager. She returned in season three as part of an exchange programme at The White Lotus in Thailand. And then there’s Greg Hunt, played by Jon Gries, who befriends Tanya in season one, is unhappily married to her by the start of season two, and going by ‘Gary’ and in a relationship with Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon) in season three. So, Sweeney returning to The White Lotus for another stay would not be out of the ordinary. The last time we saw the Mossbacher family, they were certainly wealthy enough for Olivia to be able to afford another stay. And it would be interesting to see if Olivia has changed since the events of season one, in which Olivia ran into issues with her friend Paula after the latter was involved in the theft of some of the Mossbacher’s possessions. In September, it was reported the fourth season could be set in France. With the series using Four Seasons locations as the basis for filming, the likely spots would be the Grand-Hotel du Cap-Ferrat, near Cannes, the Hotel George V in Paris and Hotel Megève in the French Alps. In April, White hinted as his desire to move away from sandy shores for season four, increasing the likelihood of the latter two being picked. The White Lotus is streaming now on HBO and NOW.
