The Undertaker Sets the Record Straight on Controversial WWE Moment

WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker has opened up about the end of his iconic undefeated WrestleMania streak, revealing that he believes it was a moment nobody, including himself, truly wanted to see. He also clarified that the final decision to lose to Brock Lesnar was not his to make.

The Undertaker’s streak ended at WrestleMania 30 in 2014 after 21 consecutive victories, a moment that is still considered one of the most shocking in WWE history. The decision to have Brock Lesnar be the one to end it remains a topic of debate among fans and wrestlers.

The End Of The Undertaker’s Streak

“I think the general consensus was that none of us wanted that. Nobody wanted it,” The Undertaker stated on his “Six Feet Under” podcast. “I think the lore, the legend and lure of that, it would have been really cool for wrestling.”

He explained that while people often ask him why he agreed to end The Streak, the reality of the business meant he had very little say in the matter. “It’s not my decision. People ask me all the time, ‘Well, why did you do it?’ Well, I didn’t really have a choice. I guess I did have a choice. I didn’t have to do it.” He then joked about the alternative, saying, “And then what happens? And then me and Brock are having to shoot at WrestleMania, and then it’s gonna, it wouldn’t have been good. I mean, might have taken it easy on him.”

Legendary Career Of The Undertaker

Ultimately, he saw it as his duty to the business and to the many performers who had helped build The Streak over the years. “You have to look at this business… there’s a lot of people that probably didn’t want to put me over to get me into that position, and they did it, and it’s just kind of the way it works,” he said (H/T to WrestlingNews.co). “Wasn’t my decision. So I had to make the best of the hand that was dealt me.” He also noted that his lack of memory of the match, due to a severe concussion, is “probably the best part” of the ordeal for him personally.

The Undertaker would go on to compete in five more WrestleMania matches, finishing his career with a final record of 25-2 at the event. For 30 years, Mark Calaway meticulously protected The Undertaker character, rarely breaking kayfabe and maintaining the mystique of “The Deadman.” He was recently seen in a backstage producer role at AAA Triplemania and continues to host his “One Deadman Show” and his “Six Feet Under” podcast.
