With a cost of living crisis still sweeping through the country, the latest findings from hiring platform Indeed may be surprising to some. Ireland was recently reported to have the highest percentage of educational attainment in the world, with over 50% of 25-64 year olds in the country holding a bachelor's degree or higher. This statistic makes the findings of Indeed's research very interesting, as the most searched role on the platform doesn't require a degree, and in many cases doesn't even pay above minimum wage. Cafe or restaurant work is often popular with graduates taking a gap year between finishing their studies and finding a job in their corresponding sector, as well as students doing part-time work. The last number of years, however, have also seen huge numbers of closures across the hospitality industry in Ireland. This was addressed in the 2025 budget released earlier this month, with the government announcing that the VAT rate on hospitality would be dropping to 9% from 13.5%. It is suggested that this reduction of pressure on smaller hospitality businesses may further boost hiring across the sector. Searches for 'kitchen porter', 'receptionist' and 'hotel' were also among the most searched titles, in the top ten, Business Plus reports. “Ireland visa sponsorship” ranked second in the search list, with Indeed also noting that 14% of searches on the Irish site come from other countries. Searches for “remote” and “work from home” roles were among the top terms, the publication reports. This is sustained by businesses themsleves, as according to Indeed, nearly one in five job postings now include remote or hybrid options.
