The six little-known conditions that qualify for a blue badge

Motoring experts have highlighted the little-known health conditions which qualify for a blue parking badge. There are roughly three million blue badge owners in the UK, but three million more are potentially entitled to have one themselves. The scheme was introduced in 1970 to help people with disabilities or mobility issues park more easily, allowing them to park closer to where they need to be. It was created to address the challenges faced by those who struggle to walk long distances from parking spaces to their destinations and has since expanded to include people with a wide range of disabilities, including hidden conditions. Car expert Ian Hajyzamanali at used car dealership Big Motoring World , said: “A blue badge can be issued to individuals with mobility issues that make walking difficult or impossible, including those who cannot walk far without experiencing extreme pain or fatigue. "It can also be issued to people who are registered blind, those receiving disability living allowance, or certain levels of personal independence payment. "Parents or carers of young children with health or mobility needs may also be eligible. "It’s important to remember that not every disability is visible, so it is vital that motorists avoid making assumptions about Blue Badge owners.” The following six conditions make a person eligible to apply for a blue badge. Severe epilepsy Those who suffer with unpredictable seizures can apply due to the risk posed. Hidden disabilities (Autism, ADHD) A blue badge is available for those who have cognitive, sensory, or behavioural conditions that affect their ability to walk safely. Mental health conditions If a person’s mental health causes extreme distress when being in public places and this affects their journey, they may be able to apply. Heart conditions Those who suffer from heart failure or arrhythmia, and are unable to walk distances without pain or fatigue, are able to apply. Chronic pain or fatigue syndromes Even if a person doesn’t use mobility aids, they can apply for a Blue Badge if they have a persistent pain or fatigue syndrome, such as fibromyalgia or ME. Children with large medical equipment Children aged three or under may qualify if they require bulky medical equipment that's hard to carry, or if they need to stay close to a vehicle to receive or be rushed for life-saving treatment.
