‘The situation wasn't resolved’ — Ex-Premier League star slams Man United after Brentford loss

A former Premier League star has slammed Manchester United for failing to replace Andre Onana this summer

Manchester United’s goalkeeping department has come under fresh fire after their defeat to Brentford, with Peter Crouch delivering a scathing assessment of the club’s summer business.

The former Premier League striker believes the Red Devils failed to fix an obvious problem and are now paying the price for indecision.

‘It feels like they’ve got three Number 2s’ — Crouch

Peter Crouch did not hold back when analysing Manchester United’s recruitment strategy, particularly their handling of the goalkeeper situation.

Senne Lammens, signed from Royal Antwerp for £21 million in the summer, has yet to make his debut, and was once again left on the bench at the Gtech Community Stadium as Altay Bayindir started.

Speaking on TNT Sports, he said, “It feels to me the situation with the goalkeeper just hasn’t been addressed; it feels like they’ve got three Number 2s.

“It’s an issue that was obvious [Andre] Onana wasn’t going to be the No 1, I think we knew that at the start of the season, and I don’t think this situation has been addressed.

“Senne Lammens has come in and was bought to potentially be a No1 but he can’t get in the team. He’s still a young lad, he’s only had one real season in football, and they’re starting Bayindir.

“I don’t know why, when you’ve got Gianluigi Donnarumma and Emi Martinez available in the summer, the situation wasn’t resolved.”

Bayindir thrust into spotlight after Onana debacle

This criticism comes amid heavy scrutiny of United’s goalkeeping options since Ruben Amorim took charge. Andre Onana departed for Trabzonspor after a string of costly errors, leaving Bayindir and Lammens to fight for the No 1 shirt in a tense and unsettled environment.

As a result, it is Bayindir who has been unexpectedly thrust into the spotlight as United’s first-choice keeper. Crouch pointed out how the Turkish international was never meant to be the main man “Bayindir understood that he was No2, but now he finds himself in a No1 situation. Obviously they don’t think Lammens is ready.

“He’s still a young man and maybe eventually he’ll be the No1, but a club of United’s stature – you think of Barthez, Van der Sar, Schmeichel – over the course of their history, they’ve always had a dominant goalkeeper.”

Crouch concluded by insisting that someone like World Cup winner Emi Martinez would have been the perfect fit for United’s current needs, “Martinez felt the obvious situation, that he’d come in; he’s dominant, he’s a character, he’s someone who fits the stature of United.”

For now, though, United appear stuck in limbo, with no clear first-choice keeper and growing pressure on Amorim to steady the situation before it spirals further.
