The Scarface video game is back with a bizarre re-release rollout

The 2006 video game sequel to Brian De Palma's Scarface — which retcons Tony Montana's death in the climax of the 1983 film — is getting a re-release on Steam and the Epic Games Store. In fact, Hong Kong-based publisher EC Digital Entertainment already released and quickly delisted the EGS release of Scarface: The World Is Yours on Wednesday after setting it live seemingly earlier than planned. That's not the only strange thing about the return of the Scarface video game. EC Digital Entertainment announced that Scarface: The World Is Yours was on its way to Steam — it was previously released for PC back in 2006 — but that due to a "technical issue," the game was "unintentionally pushed live on [the Epic Games Store] earlier than planned." Interested players who downloaded that version discovered that the re-release of Scarface: The World Is Yours included at least one fan-made mod, which was apparently bundled in without the modder's foreknowledge. According to modder "Silent," EC Digital Entertainment's re-release of the Scarface game included SilentPatch and Fusion Fix, but that "none of us were contacted about this in advance (which isn't necessary as per the license, but would be nice)." Added Silent, "I KNOW that the holder of the Scarface license wasn't willing to re-release the game, so this is suspect." Hmmm. What's more, the publisher noted on Steam that its version of Scarface: The World Is Yours "uses AI-assisted techniques to improve certain visual elements while keeping the core experience intact. The use of AI is completely optional. Players can choose to play in original or enhanced visuals at any time." Suffice it to say, the re-relase of Scarface: The World Is Yours has not gone as planned. The publisher acknowledged that in a post on the Steam listing's discussions forum. Hi everyone, We want to sincerely thank all of you who noticed and showed interest in Scarface™: The World Is Yours (2006). We’ve recently entered urgent discussions with multiple parties concerning the project’s status. After careful consideration, we believe that temporarily hiding the store page is the most appropriate step forward, and we’ve already begun coordinating with Valve to make that happen shortly. The current page was initially intended as a placeholder while we worked through ongoing licensing and technical matters. Unfortunately, the unintended release of certain builds on other platforms caused unexpected complications and concerns. Because of that, we feel it’s necessary to pause and reevaluate. We want to apologize to the community for the confusion and concern this situation may have caused. If things change and we’re able to bring the project back in the future, we’ll let you know right away. This was entirely our responsibility. We also kindly ask that no one harass or share the personal information of anyone involved—especially individuals unrelated to this project. Some of our partners working on completely separate games have already been negatively impacted, and we deeply regret putting them in that position. We accept full responsibility and are committed to doing better. Thank you for your understanding. EC Digital So, stay tuned for more, I suppose. Scarface: The World Is Yours was originally released in 2006 for PlayStation 2, Windows PC, and Xbox. A Wii version followed in 2007. The game casts players as Tony Montana as he tries to rebuild his drug empire after the events of the original film. Scarface: The World Is Yours is an open-world action-adventure game in the vein of Grand Theft Auto, and was developed by Radical Entertainment, maker of The Simpsons: Hit & Run, Prototype, and Prototype 2. A sequel to Scarface: The World Is Yours, set in Las Vegas, was in development at one point, but canceled.
