Patrick Henry is without question the best high school football team in the Timesland area. That was evident after it stifled top-ranked William Fleming 14-2 in the Mayor’s Cup on Friday.
The Patriots are the new No. 1 team in The Roanoke Times top 10 rankings for Week 5, climbing a dramatic eight spots to overtake the pole position. The move also comes after previous No. 2 William Byrd was upset by unranked Bassett.
Fleming fell eight spots to No. 9, and the Byrd dropped out of the top 10. That allowed a new team to earn a ranking and that distinction belongs to Giles. The single-wing running Spartans are 3-1 since an opening week loss to Blacksburg, have a key win over Radford and rolled past rival Narrows 38-8 on Friday. Bassett, James River and Parry McCluer have entered the conversation.
With Byrd’s loss, undefeated Lord Botetourt has risen to No. 2 as the Blue Ridge District frontrunner. Glenvar, after a 28-7 victory over Northside in an unbeaten matchup, leapfrogged Alleghany to move to No. 3. Alleghany remains undefeated but had won its three games in close fashion.
Magna Vista also jumped North Cross for the No. 5 spot after a 42-21 win over Franklin County, earning its second straight 40-point showing, and Floyd County climbed two spots to No. 8 after topping Grayson County.
