With another double-digit performance from newcomer Kevaro Russell, the University of The Bahamas (UB) Mingoes men’s basketball team defeated the Bahamas Department of Corrections (BDOCS) Challengers, 92-81, to remain undefeated in UB Showcase action, at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs National Gymnasium on Thursday. Russell led the Mingoes with 30 points, and Jerehemiah Miller had a double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Terrance Higgs scored 18 points to go along with three blocks. The Mingoes dominated the game from the opening quarter. The Challengers had the lead for about one minute off a three-pointer from Donovan Rolle, 3-2, but it was all Mingoes after that. Another Mingoes newcomer, Higgs, erased that early lead for BDOCS with a three-pointer of his own to put UB up, 5-3. The Mingoes never trailed after that point in the game. The Mingoes dominated the game but took a slight lead into the half at 51-47. Coming out of the break, the team built on the lead. Russell gave the Mingoes their biggest lead of the game with a dunk with about 5:56 remaining. Russell forced a steal and took off for a one-handed dunk to put the Mingoes up, 83-68. Coincidentally, the Mingoes took a 15-point lead again thanks to another dunk — this one from Miller on a fast-break opportunity with about 1:30 on the clock. That gave the Mingoes a 92-77 lead. Miller said the team chemistry was good, and they were able to go out and play hard. “My main focus was just to rebound the ball because I noticed the other team had a lot of tall players,” Miller said. “We would like to carry over defense, and talking on the court.” Rashad Woodside led the Challengers with 22 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Hayward Seymour added 12 points and five rebounds. The Mingoes next play Nassau Flight Services, at 7 p.m., on November 4, at the Kendal Isaacs gym.
