Avatar: The Last Airbender is plenty busy these days, but the franchise wants more. While the series' live-action adaptation continues at Netflix, all eyes are on Avatar Studios. The team there is not only planning an animated revival of Avatar, but it has another special project in the works. Today, Nickelodeon Animation and Avatar Studios confirmed they're partnering on a new prequel that will fill a major gap from The Legend of Korra. The announcement went live today courtesy of Dark Horse Comics, the publisher that will oversee the new project. "Korra fans, the next official graphic novel is on the way," the company shared in a new statement. "Young Kya makes her way for the first time in the world outside Republic City in this upcoming comic." Avatar Is Ready to Explore Kya's Unexplained History While details about this new Avatar project are limited, we do know the Dark Horse series will take place years before The Legend of Korra begins. After all, the sequel to Avatar is set when Kya is well into middle age. As the second child of Aang and Katara, Kya found herself at odds with the world given her unusual family dynamic. Much like her older brother Bumi, Kya felt distant from Aang given his duties as the Avatar, and that estrangement only grew as the years went by. Up until now, little about Kya's life is known before her entry in The Legend of Korra. The show confirmed a number of key facts about the bender, but Kya's coming-of-age story was not in the mix. This upcoming Dark Horse series will explore how Kya's adolescence transformed her into a full-blown adult, and that journey will involve her exit from Republic City. Given the kind of power we see Kya wield in The Legend of Korra, you can bet this adventure was a pivotal one for the heroine, and it'll be packed with action. The Legend of Korra Still Lives On Through Sequels, Prequels As you can imagine, the hype for this new Avatar prequel is high following its official reveal. Dark Horse has not shared any details about its release at this time. Still, if the news has you desperate for more Avatar goodness, Dark Horse does have your back. The publisher has overseen the release of many Avatar comics, and a number of them specifically address The Legend of Korra. In fact, one such graphic novel went live earlier this year. The Mystery of Penquan Island was released in March 2025, and it takes fans far away from Republic City. The comic follows Mako and Bolin as the pair travel to Penquan Island in pursuit of a missing persons case. While there, the two brothers are blindsided by a revelation regarding their late mother that leaves them stunned, forcing the pair to wrestle a part of their past they'd rather leave untouched. The Mystery of Penquan Island is now available in print and on digital.
