The latest Ted Lasso replacement is here, and it can fill the sports comedy void until season 4 hits streaming. Following the divisive Ted Lasso season 3 ending in 2023, audiences anxiously await the show’s return for its fourth season. Apple shared BTS images on the first day of shooting, so the series is underway and will be available sometime in 2026.
Ted Lasso season 4 is a highly anticipated series, as the creatives involved have teased something of a reset. Rather than return to Richmond AFC, the show will follow the Richmond women’s team, with the titular character returning to England to lead once again.
Glen Powell’s Chad Powers Is The Latest Sports Comedy Series
While we wait for Ted Lasso season 4, Chad Powers is at the top of my recommendation list. The show follows a disgraced star college quarterback as he tries to make his football comeback, using a disguise and fake identity to return to the field.
The show’s first two episodes have seen mixed reviews from audiences and critics, which I’m honestly not surprised about. The show is far from perfect, but that doesn’t stop it from being a fun, easy-going series. It has a ridiculous premise, and therefore has to maintain a ridiculous tone; something that generally doesn’t win over critics.
With that in mind, I consider this to be the type of series nostalgic comedy fans have been looking for. There’s no underlying moral message, there’s barely any dramatic arc; it’s pure, unadulterated comedy and fun. It’s an underdog sports comedy series led by a movie star who’s willing to be self-deprecating for the good of the project.
How Chad Powers Differs From Ted Lasso
Now, while the Ted Lasso comparisons are bound to happen due to the sports-comedy genre/bizarre underdog plot, they’re not entirely fair to either series. Beyond those broad strokes, these shows have numerous differences in tone, writing style, and general feeling.
While Ted Lasso is primarily a comedy, the show undoubtedly has heart, and the feel-good moments and genuine positive nature were part of what made it such a phenomenon during the pandemic. It also dips into drama fairly often and is willing to let the audience sit on earnest, sometimes saddening material.
