“When we concentrate on our process, that will allow us to play fast and free,” Drayton said. “I have to be very delicate with my messaging this week. It’s one of the things our coaching staff spent time on during our meetings on Sunday. “I’m still working through some of that messaging. I’m going to take (Monday) and work on that before we meet with the players (Tuesday).” Depth chart update Bulldogs quarterback Quentin Hayes is coming off his best game throwing the ball this season. Hayes threw for season-high 194 yards and two touchdowns in the 24-14 loss at Furman this past weekend. He played almost the entire second half for the Bulldogs. Freshman Cobey Thompkins has started the last five games for The Citadel and leads the team with 455 passing yards and four TDs. The two have split snaps all season, so shuffling between the pair of quarterbacks won’t be anything new for the Bulldogs’ offense. Drayton wasn’t ready to name a starter against VMI. “I don’t look at it like a starting quarterback and a backup quarterback,” Drayton said. “We look at it like we have two quarterbacks. I don’t know that it really matters who we trot out there first because the other one is going to play.” Other moves on the Bulldogs’ depth chart include running back Corey Ibrahim, who is listed as the starter going into the VMI game, replacing Garrison Johnson. Ibrahim, the Bulldogs’ top returning rusher from 2024, missed the first four games after suffering an injury in the team’s first preseason scrimmage. After recording his first 100-yard receiving game for the Bulldogs, Jihad Marks will start at wide receiver. Chris Benton will start on the defensive line, while Drew Nyangweso will start in the secondary. "Dirty eyes" The Citadel had struggled to move the ball in the first half against Furman, so Drayton went to an unconventional formation. The Bulldogs lined up with two offensive linemen split way wide from the ball with Marks lined up behind the blockers and brought a running back in motion. The Bulldogs had used the formation before but had only run the ball out of it.
