The best coastal road trip you’ve never heard of

Door County, Wisconsin, is one of those blindsiding destinations that feels surprisingly hidden in plain sight; the kind of place where stunned travelers wonder how they had never heard of it before. The "Cape Cod of the Midwest" is more than just legendary Lake Michigan beachfronts and four vibrant seasons. The Door Peninsula is also filled with unique towns and offbeat attractions, making it perfect for aimless road trips where itineraries are best kept minimal. (Why Oklahoma’s Route 66 is the ultimate American road trip for 2026) Stop 1: Sturgeon Bay Sturgeon Bay sets the tone for Door County with its laid-back vibes and central location ideal for tackling the peninsula. A proper introduction awaits at Waterfront Mary's, an inviting eatery often home to a can't-miss experience: the fish boil. A renowned custom carried over from Scandinavia, the event comes with a festive atmosphere, live music, and a mesmerizing open flame that prepares the central feast of freshly caught cod. Stick around after the meal: Door County cherries are a prominent ingredient in local delicacies, including the mouthwatering pies served for dessert. Sunrise and sunset are easily achievable in a single day from Sturgeon Bay; mix the morning colors with the bright red North Pierhead Light to the east, and climb the Potawatomi Tower within the state park of the same name at nightfall to enjoy the evening sky paired with unbeatable views of Green Bay. In between, walk the trails circling the pastures and barns of The Farm. Stop 2: Whitefish Bay Visitors might be shocked by the frequent presence of cliff beaches in Door County. These are a curious yet gorgeous geographic quirk of the Niagara Escarpment, a series of bluffs along the northern United States that also provide the drop for Niagara Falls to plunge over hundreds of miles away. At Cave Point County Park in Whitefish Bay, see how many underwater caves you can spot, or witness the beautiful contrasts of the earthen rocks against the crystalline blues of the lake which, combined with the elevated vistas, makes for arguably the best sunrise in Wisconsin. Caves and cliffs are scarcely the only surprise here: Whitefish Dunes State Park and Shivering Sands Preserve deliver unconventional shorelines with their sand mounds held in place by a canopy of leafy forests. Pair this vivid terrain with a stop at the Open Door Bird Sanctuary to hear a lively symphony of eagles, kestrels, and owls that call the treetops home. (Searching for Paul Bunyan—and the truth behind the legend) Stop 3: Egg Harbor The idyllic seaside isn't the only captivating feature of Egg Harbor: fascinating secrets also lie underground. Head to Shipwrecked Brew Pub, a former boarding house rumored to be haunted and built atop a series of subterranean corridors. While closed for safety these days, Al Capone, once known to vacation in Door County when he needed a retreat from organized crime, is speculated to have utilized the passages back in the day. Shipwrecked is far from the only location in Door County with an intriguing past. Take the Ghost or Murders & Mayhem tours at Door County Trolley to dive into the region’s darker side, try the lighter Lighthouse and Lakeside scenic excursions, or race go-karts at Egg Harbor Fun Park. Art studios are also a frequent sight within Door County; stop by the Plum Bottom, Idea, and Off The Wheel galleries to immerse yourself in the byproducts of the area’s notably inspirational environment. Stop 4: Baileys Harbor While cliffs, caves, dunes, and Lake Michigan beaches already provide plenty of visual distraction, these are incredibly not all of Door County’s landscapes. Located in the relatively mild northeastern corner of the peninsula, Baileys Harbor Boreal Forest and Wetlands presents a look into a biome typically found in much higher latitudes while also serving up a deluge of spellbinding greenery. Mud Lake State Wildlife Area and Kangaroo Lake are also great glimpses into the swampier side of Door County, but if hiking is too slow for immersion in the outdoors, try taking in the sights at breathtaking speed courtesy of the zip lines at Lakeshore Adventures. The company also offers aquatic rentals: Greet the day with a sunrise over Moonlight Bay, or cruise by the island with Old Baileys Harbor Light—its unique “bird cage” design was originally constructed in the 1850s. Door County’s waters have also claimed roughly 240 shipwrecks: Take the clear-bottom kayak tour to marvel at the graveyard of 19th-century vessels beneath. Stop 5: Fish Creek and Ephraim The creative energy of Door County can be infectious, and you can channel this inspiration into a project at Hands On Art Studio in Fish Creek. With no reservations needed, aspiring artists can choose from several mediums, including ceramics, metalware, mosaics, glassware, jewelry, and painting. There's also an option to ship finished works home. See other sides of the arts with a live stage performance at Northern Sky and Peninsula Players theaters, enjoy live music at the Fishstock Concert Series during the summer, or catch a movie at the Skyway Drive-In Theater, which has entertained moviegoers since 1950. Finally, don't miss the Alexander Noble House. The supposedly haunted structure, recently celebrating its 150th anniversary, boasts spooky character within its 1800s-era doctor's office exhibit and halls of antiquated relics. Peninsula State Park to the north has plenty of chances to get lost in nature and is an exceptional place to see the famously explosive colors of a Midwestern autumn. Visit the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, check out rocky cliffs and colorful dusks via trips organized by Fish Creek Scenic Boat Tours, or walk wooded paths and stumble on discoveries like the golf course, the old Blossomberg Cemetery, and the picturesque lakefront viewable atop the Eagle Tower. The adorable buildings of Ephraim, nearly all of which are painted in shades of white, make for a striking perch to admire the park's landmarks from across the harbor. While you’re in town, inscribe your name among the hundreds already immortalized on Anderson Dock. Stop 6: Sister Bay Sister Bay’s strip of pleasant streets with charming stores and unbelievable sunsets over Green Bay also offers some memorable twists. Sister Bay Bowl, whose alleys have been open since 1954, provides an expertly cozy, Midwestern ambiance with tasty bar food, including authentic Wisconsin cheese curds. In the warmer months, it's impossible not to notice the nonplussed goats grazing upon the grassy rooftops of Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant & Butik. Head inside to enjoy an all-day breakfast with lingonberries or browse the aisles of Scandinavian souvenirs in the attached gift shop. Stop 7: Ellison Bay and Washington Island Crowds tend to get sparse at the northern tip of Door County. Those looking to be fully absorbed in the outdoors can't do better than Newport State Park, a Dark Sky Zone and the only formally designated wilderness in Wisconsin. Heading on the final stretch towards the peninsula’s edge, the famed swivels of the Door County Curvy Highway on Wisconsin Route 42 might catch you off guard. Allow yourself to slow down and be present with the weaving route through the trees that also makes for fantastic photos; the drive was allegedly designed so motorists would take in the attractive surroundings more mindfully. (These Black neighborhoods shaped America. Here are their lasting legacies.) The end of the road is hardly the final stop of the journey; those who wish to travel onward must first cross "Death's Door," the harrowing strait between Green Bay and Lake Michigan doubling as Door County’s namesake and notorious for the peril it once posed to passing ships. Learn more about this history at the Death's Door Maritime Museum in Gills Rock, and then board the ferry over the infamous channel to be rewarded with Washington Island on the other side.
