The best chippies in Scotland according to locals as one named 'cut above the others'

People across Scotland have shared their picks for the best fish and chip shops in the country. Chippies in Aberdeenshire, the Highlands, and North Ayrshire were among those singled out. On Thursday, November 6, a social media user took to Reddit to find out what Scots think is the best takeaway in the country. Posting on the website's Scotland community, they asked what the country's top chippy is. One Reddit user suggested that the best fish and chip shop in Scotland is the Quayside Restaurant and Fish Bar. The eatery is located in the coastal fishing village of Gourdon in Aberdeenshire, around 27 miles from Aberdeen. Quayside serves up locally caught fish in a sea-view dining room, while takeaways are also available. In addition to its core seasonal menu, which includes haddock and chips alongside other chippy classics, there is also a specials board that features daily fresh food . The Reddit user wrote: "The Bay at Stonehaven gets all the press but those who know go to the Quayside in Gourdon." Meanwhile, one Scot claimed that the best chippy in the country is Louis's in Port Glasgow . The takeaway is situated on Bay Street in the Inverclyde town. Louis's was praised for its "amazing" fish supper, with the gravy singled out. The Scot also applauded the venue's deep-fried pizza, claiming it is superior to other chippies' offerings. They said: "Louis's (their spelling on their sign, not me misspelling their name) on Bay Street, Port Glasgow. Fish supper is amazing, and they do the best gravy of all time. "Chips are never soggy. Deep-fried pizza is somehow a cut above the others. It's amazing." Another Reddit user wrote: "Fish Works, Largs. Don’t know the competition, I won’t go anywhere else." The Fish Works is a family-run business in North Ayrshire that is managed by a husband-and-wife team that have both worked in the food industry for more than 40 years. Its food offerings include haddock in batter, lemon sole, smoked sausage, and crab loaded chips. Elsewhere, one Scot posted: "The Trawler in Golspie is the best I've ever had." The Trawler is a popular Highlands eatery that offers classic chippy dishes alongside a range of other specialities. These include scallops, lemon sole, calamari, and more. Other suggestions included the Townhead Fish Bar and Pizzeria in Biggar, Andy's Golden Fry in Johnstone, Jim Jacks in Dunfermline, and Cameron’s Chip Shop in Stornoway. Meanwhile, one Scot argued: "The one from your childhood. When you had tons of pals and you'd just all, just kick about all day, the summer just seemed to go on forever, just kick about not thinking about tomorrow or what you were doing the day after that or the day after that, just kicking about. "No aggro, no fighting, nothing, just having a laugh and jumping off the pier and swimming about and all that. And then at night, like every night, you'd all go for a chippy."
