Shah Rukh Khan and Bobby Deol’s camaraderie dates back to the 1990s. Right before the release of the latter’s debut film, Barsaat, Shah Rukh saw his poster near Juhu Beach in Mumbai. Bobby’s image stayed back with Shah Rukh and he wanted to become a ‘superstar’ like him. Years later, when Bobby was all set to mark his second innings as an actor, it was Shah Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainment that offered him the lead role in Class Of ‘83, which marked Bobby’s debut in the web space.
And now, Bobby is playing a pivotal role in Shah Rukh’s son Aryan’s directorial debut The Ba***ds Of Bollywood. In the series, Bobby is essaying the role of a superstar whose daughter, a nepo kid, falls in love with an outsider. For the unversed, the show is a satirical take on Bollywood clichés and explores the themes of power struggles, ambition, nepotism and manipulation in the film industry.
Now, speaking exclusively to News18 Showsha, Bobby lauds Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan for their parenting skills and says, “I haven’t seen Aryan so much as a child but I saw him over the years as he was growing up. I think he has shaped up to be a really good young man. Hats off to Gauri and Shah Rukh for bringing Aryan and the other kids [Suhana Khan, AbRam Khan] up so well!” But it remains to be seen if Bobby and Shah Rukh will share screen space in series years after Om Shanti Om’s Deewangi Deewangi.
So, what did he take back from working with a 27-year-old Aryan? “It was a pleasure working with him. I think he’s one of its kind. He’s very dedicated. He has got so much of conviction. He has a very strong belief in what he does. He makes it happen. I remember hearing the script but he brought so much more out of it over time. What I love the most about him is that he listens and that’s the most important thing,” states Bobby.
Talking about what sets Aryan apart from other filmmakers, he tells us, “In these 30 years, I’ve worked with so many different directors but most of them don’t want to listen to you as an actor because they think they know it all. But when it comes to Aryan, he’s so matured as a director and yet he listens to us and then conveys what he wants. With him, it’s give-and-take rather than take-and-take. Having said that, let me tell you that he makes us take a lot of takes (laughs).”
Confident that Aryan will emerge as a successful filmmaker one day, Bobby remarks, “But it’s a good thing since I discovered so much about myself as an actor while performing on the sets of The Ba***ds Of Bollywood. One thing I can tell you is that he’s going to be a name to reckon with. He’ll be someone very special, very sought-after. He’s so talented and grounded too. He doesn’t take anything for granted.”
