The alarming reality: Galamsey threatens local pharmaceutical industry
The Ghana Pharmaceutical Society has sounded the alarm on the devastating impact of galamsey on the country’s local pharmaceutical industry.
According to the Society, galamsey activities are contaminating water bodies and plants that serve as critical raw materials for local drug manufacturing, putting the industry’s sustainability at risk.
The Alarming Reality
Ghana currently relies on imports for 70% of its medicines.
Locally produced medicines require quality water for production, especially for infusion manufacturing.
When water treatment plants are shut down due to galamsey, the industry faces a catastrophic scenario.
The potential collapse of the local pharmaceutical industry would make Ghana entirely dependent on imported medicines.
The President of the Ghana Pharmaceutical Society, Dr. Samuel Kow Donkor, emphasizes that ending galamsey is not only an environmental and health concern but also a matter of national security.
The Society is urging urgent intervention to address the situation and ensure the sustainability of the local drug industry.
The contamination of water bodies and plants due to galamsey activities threatens the availability of safe water and raw materials necessary for local drug manufacturing.
