But padel - the racquet sport which was founded in Mexico in 1969 but is rapidly spreading across the globe - is causing quite the nuisance in some of Britain's affluent towns and suburbs. There are now incredibly 893 padel courts in the UK but this is only set to rise, with councils inundated with planning applications to build more. Opposition, however, is rife. Whether it's residents railing against the unstoppable rise of padel by opposing plans for more clubs or complaining about ones that are already built, it's clear that many don't want it on their doorstep. From Hampshire to Bath and Weybridge to Harrogate, residents have compared the sound of padel to 'gunshots', with some saying they can no longer sit in their gardens due to the 'appalling' noise and 'foul language'. At one trendy padel club, plans for a four-metre-high acoustic barrier have been proposed to appease neighbours, but this has only led to comparisons to constructing a 'Great Wall of China'. Tennis has not exactly embraced the newcome either. Seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic warned club tennis is 'endangered' by venues converting tennis courts into smaller padel or pickleball courts. Wimbledon, the home of tennis, has no plans to incorporate padel into SW19, with tennis purists viewing padel as a threat to the traditional game. Today, there are more than 400,000 padel players in Britain, rapidly rising from 15,000 in 2019, according to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). As of February 2025, the LTA has invested more than £6million into the growth of padel in Britain. Stars including David Beckham (pictured), Jurgen Klopp and even Serena Williams are flocking to try their hand at padel Wealthy homeowners living around Winchester Racquets and Fitness are furious at the loud bangs they hear from padel Peter and Jenni Chilvers in their garden that backs onto Winchester Racquets and Fitness British rapper Stormzy last year became an investor at Padel Social Club, while Prince William and Catherine are said to be 'hooked' on the sport. And while its basic skill level and social nature is attracting players far and wide, critics argue the cost of the sport is pricing people out. Research by Ray Algar shows the average off-peak court hire is about £30, but peak time prices can reach £80. What is Padel? Invented in Mexico in 1969, padel has the same scoring system as tennis but is played with thicker, stringless rackets and lower pressured balls. A game is started by bouncing the ball and hitting underarm below waist height. After the first return each player may use the walls much like in squash. The court has what are called rebound ends (usually of toughened glass) and walls of firm rebound mesh and/or glass along the sides. The ball can bounce and hit the wall only once on your side of the net before you return it. Scoring in padel is the same as tennis and is most commonly played as sets and games. To win a set, you must win six games and be leading by a clear two. Similarly, to clinch a game, you must win four points with a two-point advantage. Games are scored as 15, 30, 40. If it goes to 40-40 this is a 'deuce'. You still have to win by two clear points. Whoever wins the next point will have 'advantage' and can seal the game by winning the following point. The game is fast paced and often described as a mix between tennis and squash. The British Padel Association was formed in 1992 by a group of expats wanting to play in that year's World Championships. In November 2020 the Lawn Tennis Association was confirmed as the national governing body for Padel. Advertisement The growth of the sport has also left communities divided, with neighbours complaining about their lives being ruined by noisy players. Wealthy homeowners living by one club in the cathedral city of Winchester, Hampshire, said they have to put up with loud bangs from padel courts at all hours of the day. The popularity of padel has 'boomed' over the last couple of years, but people living near the courts have said the noise would be classed as 'antisocial behaviour' in any other setting. The residents next to Winchester Racquets and Fitness said the 'thwack' of the ball being struck is so loud it is like a gunshot. They said the noise starts just after breakfast and leaves them cowering inside for the entirety of the day. Jenni Chilvers, who has a garden that backs onto the padel courts, said that she has not sat in her garden for the last two years because the noise is so loud. The 76-year-old said the noise happens from 7am and continues on until 9pm. She said this had 'significantly impacted' her and her husband, Peter, 83, and said that she keeps the windows shut even in summer. The couple have lived in the house for the last 34 years and said the tennis club has previously been 'good neighbours' and has been considerate of the surrounding houses. But Mrs Chilvers said the padel courts were 'imposed' upon them without any consultation about the noise. She said that the noise of the ball hitting the bat created a loud 'cracking' sound that was similar to 'gunshots'. To make matters worse, she also heard 'foul language' coming from the courts. She said people would be 'shrieking' and 'shouting' while playing padel. Mr Chilvers said the worst time was on a Saturday morning, when the good players would hit the ball very hard. Mrs Chilvers said: 'It has impacted on us quite seriously over the past three years. The noise is appalling. 'It is from seven in the morning until nine at night. When the windows are open, it is all day. It has significantly impacted on us. 'We have lived in this house for 34 years. We bought it knowing there was a tennis club, and it is quite nice to hear it in the summer. 'But now they have imposed this on us. This should not be happening.' When describing the noise, she said: 'It does sound like gunshots because it is a thwack. It is the impact of the ball on the bat. 'It is like a crack. Even sitting in here [the living room] in the afternoon, reading, you can hear it with the windows closed. 'It is not just the noise of the padel itself, but they shout. They shriek. We have had foul language. Again, the tennis club could say it is a residential area please keep it down, but it has not worked so far. 'The worst time is Saturday morning. It is all the good players taking the work week's aggression out. 'I have not sat in the garden for two years. When I was very unwell, last summer, I couldn't sit outside and relax.' Mrs Chilvers suggested that padel courts should not be built in residential areas and said they should be put in the countryside. The three padel courts were built in 2020 around properties that sell well in excess of £1million in Winchester, Hants. She said: 'There are so many other options to put it out of the way of people and that is why it makes me so cross. 'The tennis club have been good neighbours and people need to realise if you move somewhere the tennis club you are going have that but it is when something is imposed on you it is vastly different.' She said she had no issue with the game itself and thought it was a 'good game' that got people exercising because it is very 'energetic'. Mr Chilvers said: 'It was a rash decision they made. Even people over on the other side of the road can hear it. There are now thousands of padel players across the UK. He suggested that a building could be built around the courts, but said he was sceptical that it would keep the noise in. One resident who wished to remain anonymous said: 'We can still hear it. It is like a bang, bang, bang, and quite a lot of shouting. 'It is not as severe here as it is for the people who back on to the courts. 'It is not a sensible sport to have at the bottom of people's gardens, but it is obviously a very popular game.' Another said it was more like living near 'five-a-side football' when you walked up to the club because of all the 'shouting'. He said padel courts are probably more suited to 'less residential areas' where people will not be bothered by the noise. After a noise abatement order was made by the council, a proposed plan to reduce the noise of the padel courts had been made to build a four-metre-high acoustic barrier around the courts. Mr Chilvers was sceptical that this would reduce the noise coming from the courts and said that it would merely push the sound around the wall. The wall was described as 'the Great Wall of China' by one resident who wished to remain anonymous. Another resident, who lives around 100 metres away from the padel courts, said he was concerned that the wall would 'affect players' hearing' because the sound would bounce off the walls. There is a proposal for the development of around 30 flats to be built adjacent to the padel courts, and Mrs Chilvers said this would create a problem for the residents in the flats. She said they had been advised to 'keep their windows shut' so they would not hear the noise from the padel courts. The council gave permission for that, and there was no consideration given to those flats. No mitigation for us and none for them. 'They have been advised to not open their windows. You can't make it up.' Elsewhere, residents in Harrogate say that padel courts built without planning consent at a nearby gym has ruing their summer with the constant zinging of balls. People living near David Lloyd's Club are up in arms about the racket which they say began when the two outside courts was built in December 2023. The area on the outskirts of the town includes protected woodland, and is rich in wildlife such as bats, owls and squirrels. Residents say the noise had been going on all summer, with many residents claiming they are frightened to go in their gardens because of it. Before then, the club only offered tennis facilities, which the householders insist was not a problem. Bob Wilkinson, 77, said: 'We have lived here for years. We have had tennis courts which were a smooth gentle noise. Then suddenly these padel courts were built. The noise is very different. 'It is a like a rifle shot. It can sometime be three or four minutes continuous. The local authority measured 78 loud strikes in just four minutes. 'It is just really annoying. They have lots of information not to build the padel courts where they have done. French guidance says no padel court should be 100 metres of housing in a quiet area. 'We are a quiet area normally. The garden of the house is less than 50 metres away. The noise is just an intrusion all the time.' Mr Wilkinson, an international manager who worked all across Europe advising companies on how to improve, added: 'The council has issued an enforcement notice to stop playing padel. David Lloyd has just ignored that. 'They said they have the padel court booked until the end of October and they might stop then.' Nodding in agreement, his wife Regina, 63, who has four daughters and 13 grandchildren, added: 'The courts are outside and subject to weather. They could be played 365 days a year if they were inside. We can't understand why they don't do that. 'The woodland behind our house is also protected. The bat population has been reduced though it is still there. David Lloyd has denied it is anything to do with them.' They have formed an Oak Beck Valley Residents Association, representing 200 homes, because of the complaints. Patrick Fitzgerald, Chairman of Oak Beck Valley Parish Council, said: 'About 18 months ago they started playing. We complained and complained and then found out they did not have planning permission. 'They put in a retrospective application which was turned down. 'They also put a noise abatement on the site. There is a statutory delay on these notices so they have still kept playing. 'It is dreadful. The noise is really bad. They have a social area around the courts which includes loungers and cakes and drinks. They can play until very late at night. 'They have reduced the hours as though they were doing us a big favour. But its seven days a week and it is driving us crazy. 'They are going to try and stop at the end of the month. It is just dreadful. We can't believe they behave so badly. They do not give us a toss about us. 'They have treated us with contempt. They have a huge indoor tennis building and we cannot understand why they don't just put it in inside. Then everyone would be happy. 'It is like an amphitheatre affect which makes the noise worse. 'They are damaging the wildlife as well.' She added: 'We were all horrified and started looking into it. We realised they had no planning permission for the padel courts. Residents realised just how noisy it is. It is very intrusive, a constant noise. We have complained to David Lloyd who have taken absolutely no notice. 'There are about 17 complaints which David Lloyd has ignored. We managed to form the resident's association to get things going. We managed to put enough heartfelt objections in about the padel court. It is a loud sport. The acoustics of the area mean it is amplified. 'So, we managed to get the padel courts refused. But they have carried on playing and had a month to wind things down. 'There have social areas with tables and chairs. There is a lot of shouting and music. They did cut the hours down from ten to five as soon as the planning permission is sorted. But it will revert back until eight in the morning until ten at night. 'You can have eight people playing, shouting, and swearing. It is not like tennis. 'The racket is hard. The ball is hard. They whack it against the glass walls. At the top of the glass walls, there is a metal cage. It they hit that is like a garage door slamming. 'It is a problem for anyone. Some people are saying they have had their summer ruined. They could not go in the garden because of the noise. 'The council have had an enforcement notice in and a noise abatement notice. 'You would have thought after speaking to the council if they had any respect for people around here, they would stop it straight away. 'Some of the players say we should not have moved here if they did not want to listen to the padel. 'We have been here for 40 years.' Her husband Richard, 72, added: 'The floodlights are on all the time. We have bats, and stuff like that. You have your keep-fit blokes in the morning, shouting and bawling. It just sounds like a gunshot going off. 'A lot of places have padel courts, but indoor ones which do not cause a problem.' North Yorkshire Council launched an investigation into 'alleged noise nuisance' earlier this year. It says it is clear that the 'noise was at an unacceptable level'. A noise abatement notice has been served requiring David Lloyd to stop or reduce the noise to an appropriate level, while planning enforcement is considering appropriate action. David Lloyd said in a statement the cub was 'committed to making a positive contribution to the communities and environment in which they operate. 'We continue to work, collaboratively with North Yorkshire Council and have put in place a voluntary restriction in the operational hours of both our padel and Battle box facilities while the matter is reviewed. 'We are also undertaking a period of noise assessment at the padel courts.'
