It was a shame that Manning left the game early, since he had engineered a 17-point 4th quarter comeback just moments before the injury. How did Arch Manning Play? Manning was having a career game, going 29-for-46 with a career high 346 passing yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. During the first half, it looked like another poor outing for Manning, who had notably underwhelmed on his preseason hype. He only had 99 yards, but he turned it around in the second half. After Manning left the game, backup Matthew Caldwell came in and threw a game-winning touchdown, leaving the final score at 45-38. He ended up really moving the ball through the air, something which Manning has failed to do throughout his time as a starter. His rushing impact has been pronounced, but he showed the ability to do damage with his arm. “We didn’t play great football tonight, but we surely fought and we played as a team,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said after securing the victory. “I think we got a mulligan because tonight was a culture win. I said this to the team, I don’t know if I’ve ever been more proud of a group of guys. When they go up 17 in the fourth quarter… these guys literally didn’t blink.” Regarding Manning’s performance, Sarkisian praised the quarterback, who kept going despite the sluggish offense. “I thought Arch battled his tail off,” the coach added.
