TEWU declares nationwide strike over stalled conditions of service

The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana has declared an indefinite nationwide strike from Friday in protest against what it called the government’s persistent failure to address long-standing concerns of non-teaching staff across the country’s education sector.

In a statement signed by General Secretary King James Azortibah, TEWU directed all its members — including non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES), public and technical universities, the Ghana Library Authority, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board — to stay at home until further notice.

“This decision has become inevitable due to Government and employer institutions’ persistent failure to address long-standing concerns… despite exhausting all laid-down legal and procedural requirements,” the statement said.

Key demands

TEWU said its decision to strike was driven by several unresolved grievances that have lingered despite repeated engagements with government agencies.

The union is demanding the immediate signing of Conditions of Service for all non-teaching staff across affected institutions, and the inclusion of non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service in the Continuous Professional Development Allowance scheduled to be paid in September.

It also wants the government to address long-standing promotion-related concerns, particularly cases where staff who successfully passed interviews remain unpaid or have yet to be confirmed in their new roles.

Additionally, TEWU is calling on the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to urgently conclude and sign all outstanding agreements to ensure equity and fairness in the sector.

Disruption expected

The strike is expected to disrupt key administrative, security, library and support services in schools, universities, libraries and cultural institutions nationwide.

The union said it had copied its declaration to the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labour, the GES, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and the National Labour Commission and urged employers to respect the decision and avoid actions that infringe on the lawful rights of non-teaching staff.
