Tensions In DU Polls: ABVP, NSUI Accuse Each Other Of Violence And Fear Tactics

The Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election campaign witnessed heightened tension on Tuesday after clashes broke out at KMC College. Both the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) accused each other of violence, intimidation, and disrupting the academic atmosphere of the campus.
NSUI Accuses ABVP Of Attacking Purvanchal Students
According to NSUI, the violence unfolded shortly before Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai was scheduled to reach the college, where students from Purvanchal were preparing to welcome him. NSUI alleged that ABVP activists carried out attacks on its supporters in a bid to disrupt the programme.
“This clearly exposes ABVP’s deep-rooted hostility towards Purvanchal students and their growing frustration over the overwhelming support NSUI is receiving,” the NSUI said in a statement.
Ajay Rai, who was en route to the campus, issued a video message for the students. “ABVP is rattled by the massive support NSUI is receiving. The violence at KMC is proof of their fear. I am coming to stand with you,” he assured.
NSUI reiterated that no intimidation can break the spirit of students and pledged to respond to such acts “through the power of their vote.”
“Congress Bringing Outsiders, Creating Fear”: ABVP
ABVP strongly rejected the charges and turned the blame towards NSUI and Congress leaders. ABVP alleged that clashes among NSUI workers and the violent politics of Congress is creating fear, particularly among women students, and spoiling the academic environment.
The student organisation claimed that Congress-linked leaders have been entering Delhi University campuses accompanied by large groups of outsiders, who, according to them, have no connection with student issues or the union elections.
“Congress and NSUI are bringing outsiders to campus and spreading violence and anarchy. DU’s campus is a centre of study and positive student politics, but their interference has made it unsafe,” said Sarthak Sharma, ABVP’s Delhi state secretary.
ABVP pointed to earlier instances, including a viral video of an altercation involving a former NSUI candidate, as proof of “violent politics” within the rival organisation. ABVP also claimed that Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda was seen campaigning for an NSUI-supported candidate in South Campus today, which caused inconvenience to students returning home. returning home.
“Such repeated interventions show that Congress is trying to disturb the peace of the university environment. ABVP will continue to fight for students’ safety and ensure a positive campus atmosphere,” Sharma added.
