Gain, maintain or lose. They are the stark outcomes for restaurateurs who attended the Good Food Guide Awards on Monday night, the traditional lay day for the hospitality industry. Attendees caught up with colleagues while enduring a nervous wait to see if their venues had maintained their number of treasured hats, the guide’s famous barometer of culinary excellence. The great and the good gathered at The Timber Yard, the events space in that liminal part of Port Melbourne, framed both by luxury apartment complexes and container terminals, included hospitality PR Joanna Reymond-Burns, who used to attend the awards as a child with her father, restaurant royalty Jacques Reymond. “There is a lot of tension in the room, but it is also comradely because we all want to support each other and see the industry flourish.” Reymond runs specialist PR agency Reymond Communications, while her three siblings have four venues on the go: Bistro Gitan, L’Hotel Gitan, Frederic and Village Wine Bar in Albert Park.
