Telangana CM asks FM for FRBM relief for school programme

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has appealed to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to provide a relaxation in the FRBM (Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management) limits and support its school development programme with an outlay of ₹30,000 crore.

“We are building 105 Young India Integrated Residential Schools in 105 out of the 119 Assembly constituencies in the State to provide corporate-style education to students from BC, SC, ST, and minority communities,” Reddy informed the Finance Minister during his meeting with her in New Delhi on Tuesday.

He said the construction work for four schools had already started, and tenders for the remaining schools had been finalised. Each school will accommodate 2,560 students, totalling 2.70 lakh students across all schools.

While the construction of schools would cost ₹21,000 crore, an amount of ₹9,000 crore would be required to equip various schools and colleges with laboratories and other infrastructure.

“We request you to permit us to constitute a special corporation to mobilise funds for the scheme and provide an exemption from the FRBM limit,” he said.

He always wanted the Finance Minister to facilitate the restructuring of loans that were taken at a very high interest rate by the previous government. “Repayment of loans has become a huge challenge for the State Government,” he said.
