Telangana Announces 85% Quota For Local Students In PG Medical, Dental Courses

The Telangana government has announced 85 percent reservation for local students in postgraduate (PG) medical and dental courses under the management quota in private medical colleges. The decision, announced by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy after a proposal from Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha, aims to ensure fair access to PG opportunities for Telangana’s own MBBS graduates. Earlier, all management quota seats were filled under the All India Quota (AIQ), allowing students from other states to secure most of the positions. With the new rule, 85 percent of these MQ–1 seats will now be reserved for Telangana students, while the remaining 15 percent will continue to be open to candidates from across the country. For the 2025–26 academic year, Telangana has 31 PG medical colleges with 2,983 seats. Of these, 741 are PG medical management quota seats, and 374 come under the MQ–1 category. Officials said the new policy will reserve around 318 PG medical seats and 70 dental seats for Telangana students. Health Minister Rajanarsimha said, “This change will significantly benefit thousands of MBBS graduates in Telangana, as PG seats are limited and competition is fierce.” He added that the move would create more equitable opportunities for students who completed their undergraduate studies within the state’s medical institutions. By introducing the new quota, the government expects to increase the number of specialist doctors serving in the state. “The number of specialist doctors in the state will increase, thereby providing better medical services to the public,” Rajanarsimha said in a post on social media. He said that expanding access to PG education for local students will help retain talent and strengthen healthcare delivery across Telangana.
