According to Abhishek Banerjee, 'Earlier, voters used to elect governments, but now the BJP is handpicking voters through the undemocratic SIR process'. He questions why this 'exclusionary tactic' is being implemented in West Bengal, while other states sharing borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar are excluded. Banerjee points out that while four northeastern states share a border with Myanmar, the origin of Rohingya refugees, West Bengal does not, yet it is being singled out for the SIR exercise. The Trinamool Congress has threatened widespread protests, alleging the move is a politically motivated attempt to disenfranchise legitimate voters ahead of the elections.
