Approximately 200 contract AI worker who were assigned the job to enhance the artificial intelligence systems of Google have been laid of from the organization in the past few weeks. According to a report published by Wired, the layoffs were conducted by GlobalLogic, that is an outsourcing firm focusing on Google AI rating work. And a lot of these AI raters have stated their concern, citing their efforts were being used to train AI models that could make their roles good for nothing one day, What These Contractors Worked On? All the contractors worked on different tasks like editing response from Google Gemini chatbot and improving the AI-generated summaries for Google Search results. Under the process, the workers were supposed to check if the answers given by system are natural sounding, backed by reliable sources, and accurate. Talking beyond KRA, a lot of raters suggested that the place was difficult to work due to factors like little to no job security, and tight deadlines. One of the workers, Andrew Lauzon when asked the reason behind his layoff received a response that talked about ramping down the project. Apart from that, reports also say that workers directly hired by GlobalLogic make $28 to $32 per hour. On the other hand, the workers coming through third parties only get $18 to $22 per hour. As for Google’s POV, the company is playing it safe and keeping itself at bay from the fiasco. Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini said, ‘These individuals are employees of GlobalLogic or their subcontractors, not Alphabet.
