Teachers’ Union Slams Minister Over Missing Pay The President of the Belize National Teachers Union is standing up for teachers. On Monday, Nadia Caliz took to Facebook to challenge comments from Education Minister Oscar Requena. The minister claimed that the missing salaries teachers have been complaining about were due to deductions for advance payments made back in December. But Caliz says that’s not true and calls the statement disrespectful to Belize’s educators. Now, the union is demanding that the Ministry fix the issue immediately, even hinting at possible industrial action if things don’t change soon. Nadia Caliz, National President, BNTU “Members, we’re gonna get to the bottom of this and we have to get to the bottom of this. This is disrespected highest level. Honestly disrespect to the highest level. You don’t do that to the workers of your country and you don’t play it down, especially the teacher right now who the landlord has asked to vacate the premises because he cannot pay his rent. No light, no water right now. Oh, it’s not an issue of teachers not being paid. It should have been, it’s not an issue of majority of the teachers not being paid, but there are a few because last month we had to work together to try and get over a hundred paid. So when did they ever get their incremental allowances is the question the BNTU wants to know since they were given an advance, when were they paid? And for the record, since I did that live, there are so many teachers pointing out to us that they haven’t gotten their allowances as yet. They haven’t gotten their increments as yet. Is this going to be a repeat of November, 2024? Is this gonna be a repeat of November, December, 2023? Haven’t people learn their lesson as yet? There’s a storm on the horizon and this time it’s a big one.”
