TCS Dismisses Cyberattack as Reason for M&S IT Desk Contract Termination, Calls Both Matters ‘Clearly Unrelated’

New Delhi, October 27: Marks & Spencer (M&S) has reportedly ended its contract with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for managing the company’s IT service desk. The decision comes months after TCS faced an investigation following a cyberattack that affected the UK retailer. While the termination affects the service desk operations, M&S continues to engage TCS for other IT and technology-related services. TCS has clarified that the cyberattack and the end of the IT service desk contract are unrelated matters. In April 2025, a cyberattack disrupted M&S operations, which forced it to halt online orders. TCS clarification came after the UK media report suggested that M&S decided not to renew its USD 1 billion technology helpdesk contract with the company. The reports alleged that the British retailer suffered losses of nearly GBP 300 million due to a cyberattack. As per a report of Financial Times, TCS clarified that the termination of its service desk contract by M&S and the recent cyberattack were "clearly unrelated." The company explained that M&S had begun a standard competitive procurement process in January and had already selected another service provider "much prior to the cyber incident in April." As per multiple reports, TCS clarified that it is not responsible for managing cybersecurity services for M&S, as that role is handled by a different vendor. The company added that it had carried out a full assessment of its own networks and systems and found no security issues or breaches originating from its side. As per a report of Moneycontrol, TCS stated that the service desk contract represented an "insignificant part" of its overall relationship with M&S. The company added, "TCS continues to work on numerous other areas in its role as a strategic partner for M&S and is proud of this longstanding partnership."
