It looked like a festive time machine was cranked at full power at the Victim Advocates Reaching Out's Fourth Annual Purple Gala with the theme, "A Night to Remember: Decades of Style." The Purple Gala is VARO’s signature fundraising event to help provide services to victims of domestic violence and other deeply traumatic experiences. Guests to the Oct. 11 event at Hilton Guam Resort and Spa were given the option to attend with iconic looks from their favorite decade or whatever they were most comfortable in. Deneen Brown, who has been a volunteer victim advocate for about five years with VARO, said she feels committed to supporting individuals who have experienced trauma. "My motivation stems from a desire to empower victims and help them navigate the complexities of their situations," she said. "By providing emotional support, resources, and guidance, I aim to make a positive impact in their lives during difficult times." Brown chose to wear clothing inspired by the '80s because she said the decade is synonymous with bold fashion, creativity, and a spirit of fun that resonates with her. "The 80s were a time of self-expression, where unique styles and colorful outfits defined the cultural environment," she said. "By embracing this theme, I not only celebrate the iconic trends of the era but also aim to bring a sense of nostalgia and joy to the event." VARO’s goal is to raise awareness and educate residents on the challenges faced by victims of domestic, family, and/or sexual violence, and to celebrate the strength and resilience of these victims. The gala brought together individuals from all walks of life dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of the victims.
