Tapas by the sea at El Tardeo Beach, Sabinillas

After a full week of work and play, our group of three adults and three children under seven was looking for a relaxed Friday evening meal in Sabinillas. We settled on El Tardeo Beach, drawn in by its tapas menu, which promised tasty options at reasonable prices. The kids were easy to please, all choosing meatballs with fries, which arrived in generous portions and were clearly a hit. For the adults, we sampled some of the restaurant’s more adventurous options. As northerners and Scots, it’s no surprise we opted for the black pudding dishes. One came with goat’s cheese toast and raspberry jam, a perfect combination of savoury and sweet, while the black pudding empanadas were flaky, rich and full of flavour. No tapas experience would be complete without patatas bravas, and the portion served here was generous, accompanied by alioli and a spicy tomato sauce that had just the right kick. We also enjoyed a special smoked salmon and avocado toast, which was fresh, creamy and zingy, as well as tender, flavoursome pork carrillada. The dishes were all delicious and cooked to perfection. For dessert, the kids devoured waffles with ice cream. The portions were large enough for everyone to share, and the waffles were fluffy with plenty of choice in sauces and ice cream flavours. Service at El Tardeo Beach was excellent. Our waitress was attentive, friendly and great with the children. The setting is ideal for families, with safe beach space directly in front of the restaurant where the kids could play under our watchful eyes. Drinks, including wine and beer, rounded off the meal, and the total bill came to a very reasonable amount for six people. Although the restaurant screens football matches on big screens inside, it does not feel like a sports bar. The atmosphere is relaxed but a little higher end than some of the more casual tapas bars, making it suitable for families, couples or groups of friends. Google reviews show that others agree, with diners praising the food, service and setting. El Tardeo Beach also offers sunbeds in the summer months, which were still available during our visit but may now have been stored away with the current weather. Overall, our visit put El Tardeo Beach in our list of best places to eat in Sabinillas. The combination of excellent food, attentive service, family-friendly setting and great value means we will definitely be returning.
