The legacy laid down by universal compulsory elementary education since 1921 under the then Justice Party and various schemes by successive governments thereafter have ensured that Tamil Nadu produces 20% of India’s graduates, Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services, Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, said in Chennai on Friday (September 12, 2025).
Inaugurating the Professional Development Conference and Exposition 2025 organised by the International Tamil Engineers Forum (ITEF), Mr. Rajan said Tamil Nadu’s journey to the forefront of tertiary education was built on this legacy, and continuing innovations, like the expansion of the noon meal scheme, providing protein in the noon meal, providing free uniforms, cycles, laptops, and footwear, led to at least 50% of the youth entering some form of tertiary education.
“In particular, in Engineering and Arts and Sciences, Tamil Nadu produces about 20% of India’s graduates despite being less than 6% of India’s population. This has been the backbone of our growth, of our ability to capitalise on globalisation, on investments in the areas of manufacturing, IT, and IT services,” he added.
P. Krishna Jegan, chairman, ITEF, H. Shankar, managing director, Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited, and C. Selvam, managing director, ITEF, spoke. S.S. Sivasankar, Minister for Transport and Electricity, Mylsami Annadurai, former Director, ISRO Satellite Centre, and A. Sivathanu Pillai, former CEO and MD, BrahMos Aerospace, were present at the inaugural.
