Syria’s Sweida Governor to QNA: Qatar’s Humanitarian Support to Sweida Alleviated Suffering of theDisplaced
Damascus, September 28 (QNA) – Governor of Syria’s Sweida Mustafa Bakour praised the humanitarian support provided by the State of Qatar to the governorate during the recent crisis, stressing that it had a significant impact in calming the situation and alleviating the suffering of the displaced and refugees.
In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), the governor of Sweida indicated that Qatar’s contributions have helped meet the basic needs of those affected and restore social stability. He voiced his thanks and appreciation to the State of Qatar for these fraternal stances, which he described as having left a clear imprint on the souls of the governorate’s people.
He added that these initiatives would enhance the spirit of fraternal solidarity and provide residents with a sense of reassurance, especially in light of the difficult circumstances they have been experiencing.
Regarding the plan recently proposed at a tripartite meeting involving Syria, Jordan, and the United States to address the situation in the province, the governor of Sweida emphasized that this plan represents a significant step toward stability, indicating that it has contributed to calming tensions and creating a better environment for dialogue and coexistence.
The governor of Sweida added that the success of this plan, which represents a starting point for a new, more stable and developed phase, depends on the commitment of all parties to implement it seriously. He stressed that the priority at this stage is to calm the situation and establish security, then move to subsequent steps in the path of reconstruction and development. He pointed out that the governorate is currently working to activate this roadmap through internal dialogue and communication with residents, and coordination with the displaced, at a time when the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is conducting international contacts to create a positive climate that allows for the roadmap’s implementation on the ground.
Mustafa Bakour noted that measuring success at the present time may be difficult, but the coming days will reveal the parties’ seriousness in adhering to the agreed-upon framework. He emphasized that the true assessment will depend on the progress made in implementation and the engagement of various local stakeholders with these efforts.
Regarding basic services in Sweida, the governor explained that work is underway to improve electricity, water, and health conditions. He noted that these issues have been among the governorate’s priorities since he assumed his duties, but that security conditions and previous tensions have at times prevented the completion of these efforts.
He indicated that coordination is underway with the Ministry of Energy to repair destroyed towers and damaged networks, which will contribute to a gradual improvement in the electricity situation. This, in turn, will have a positive impact on the water sector, which is directly linked to electricity supply. He emphasized that work is proceeding gradually, and that Syrian citizens will begin to feel a tangible improvement in these services in the coming period.
Bakour pointed out that the local community in Sweida has suffered greatly from successive crises, starting with displacement and the accompanying suffering and pain, and continuing with the security and economic problems that have exhausted the residents. He emphasized that these circumstances have made the need for solutions more urgent, which makes the success of current initiatives more likely if there is a sincere will.
He stressed that Arab and international support, led by Qatar, constitutes a contributing factor in enhancing the chances of success of the plan for Sweida, noting that the international community is aware of the extent of the suffering experienced by the people of the province, and that there is a conviction of the necessity of finding real solutions that restore security and stability.
The governor of Sweida expressed optimism about the success of this plan, provided there is genuine will, sincerity, and cooperation to serve as a true gateway out of the crisis.
Addressing the people of Sweida, the governor said that the time has come to begin a new phase based on joint construction and ending the suffering. Everyone must turn a new page and return to building together, as Sweida governorate is an integral part of Syria.
Concluding his remarks to QNA, the governor of Sweida stressed the need for everyone to work to heal the wounds and return the displaced to their homes. He added that the suffering will not go away if the situation remains as it is, but rather will remain a source of tension and problems. He emphasized the need to start over with a spirit of cooperation so that Sweida can regain its health and life can return to normal. (QNA)
