Trump cancels clean energy grant to expand Syracuse factory:A Central New York factory that makes parts for electric heat pumps says it may cut back its expansion plans after President Donald Trump’s administration canceled a $5 million grant to help pay for the project. The $25 million expansion at Bitzer Scroll Inc. in DeWitt would add a new assembly line for the company’s high-efficiency compressors and initially create 20 new jobs. But the Department of Energy said Thursday it is terminating grants for 223 clean energy projects in 16 states, all of which backed Kamala Harris in last year’s presidential election.“The whole thing of Trump bringing jobs back to America is completely running in reverse for us,” said John Allcott, vice president of North American operations for Bitzer Scroll. “It’s just killing us.”

Disabled Central NY woman found in hot, filthy shed was near death: A severely disabled woman kept in a filthy, 100-degree shed in Oswego County was likely only a couple days away from death when rescued, state troopers said Friday. The 46-year-old woman had so little liquid in her body that she had stopped sweating, a sign of heat exhaustion, a state police spokesperson said. Her primary caregiver, who neighbors confirmed is her mother, was arrested.
Hung juries in Syracuse immigration case reveal limits of deportation push (Editorial): For all of its might, the federal government’s immigration crackdown faces one formidable obstacle: convincing a jury of ordinary people that it is lawful and just. Twice in the past two months, Doris Aleman-Bonilla, a 30-year-old Honduran woman from Fulton, stood trial in Syracuse federal court on charges she is in the country without legal permission. Twice the cases ended in hung juries. Two hung juries won’t stop Trump’s deportation machine. However, the impressive degree of thoughtfulness and bravery shown by these jurors is a challenge to the rest of us: How do we find the courage to, in our own ways, resist this cruel crusade?
