Swimming community loses Stephan Ottley

Former Trinidad and Tobago swimmer Stephan Ottley has died. Ottley, who competed for the Flying Fish swim club and T&T in the 1990s, died on Sunday. Yesterday, the Aquatics Sports Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ASATT) described Ottley as, “a cherished member of our swimming community.” Ottley was T&T’s first male representative at the World Short Course Swimming Championships where he finished in the top 30 in both the 100 metres and 200m breaststroke events. Ottley also won multiple regional medals at CARIFTA, CISC, and CCCAN meets, and set and held numerous breaststroke national and regional age group records. ASATT noted that in November 2023, Ottley, “demonstrated his unwavering sportsmanship and love for swimming by personally preparing and presenting a plaque to Anpherne Bernard, the young swimmer who broke his long-standing 13-14 male 200m breaststroke record. His gesture showed the kindness and encouragement he had for all swimmers.” The ASATT release added: “Stephan’s love for the sport endured throughout his life. He frequently reached out to provide advice to young breaststrokers and remained a passionate supporter and fan of swimming up until his last days. Touchingly, the night before his passing, Stephan shared an article with us featuring his and Siobhan Cropper’s triumphs leading a CCCAN team in Mexico during the 1990s—an enduring testament to his joyous memories and lasting impact on the sport.”
