A suspect previously detained as part of investigations into the terror attack at a synagogue in north Manchester has been re-arrested at Manchester Airport . Counter-terrorism investigations are ongoing after knifeman Jihad Al-Shamie unleashed horror at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Middleton Road in Crumpsall on Thursday (October 2) as the Jewish community marked the holy day of Yom Kippur. Attacker Al-Shamie, 35, was shot dead by armed officers at the scene. Police believe he had been influenced by extremist Islamist ideology and revealed he had called 999 during his deadly attack pledging allegiance to the so-called Islamic State terror group. A total of six other suspects were initially arrested in connection with the incident and ‘interviewed at length’, head of Counter Terrorism Policing North West (CTPNW), Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts said on Wednesday (October 8). Last Sunday (October 5), two were released without charge – a woman, 18, and a man, 43. The remaining four were then later released – two men, aged 30 and 32; and two women, aged 46 and 61. In a fresh update, police confirmed the 30-year-old man who was first taken into custody on the same day as the attack has been re-arrested at Manchester Airport on Thursday afternoon (October 9). He had been initially arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism following the fatal incident. He has since been re-arrested on suspicion of Failing to Disclose Information contrary to S38B of the Terrorism Act 2000 after being stopped at the airport at around 12.34pm. He has since been bailed with conditions. Counter-terror cops say they do not believe there is any ongoing threat due to last week’s attack, with the investigation ongoing. Father-of-three Melvin Cravitz, 66, was killed in the incident last week, along with Adrian Daulby, 53, believed to have been inadvertently shot by police as he ran to block the synagogue doors to stop Al-Shamie getting inside to continue his knife rampage. — Day in day out, our reporters in the Manchester Evening News newsroom bring you remarkable stories from all aspects of Mancunian life.
