In a major development, it has emerged that the Indian cricket team has decided not to share the presentation dais with Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi should they make the Asia Cup final and win the tournament. The title clash of the continental event is slated to be held on September 28.
Being ACC president, Naqvi is expected to hand over the winner’s trophy, but the Indian team is unlikely to accept the silverware should this be the case.
“…it is reliably learnt that if India make the tournament’s final on September 28, the players won’t be sharing the presentation dais with Naqvi, who is expected to hand over the winner’s trophy as ACC head,” reports news agency PTI.
Naqvi is also the chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Pakistan Threaten Withdrawal
Meanwhile, PCB has lodged a complaint with the ICC over the actions of match referee Andy Pycroft for allegedly telling the two captains not to shake hands during the toss for their Asia Cup Group A match on Sunday.
PCB wants Pycroft to be removed as referee from the Asia Cup.
“The PCB has lodged a complaint with the ICC regarding violations by the Match Referee of the ICC Code of Conduct and the MCC Laws pertaining to the Spirit of Cricket. The PCB has demanded an immediate removal of the Match Referee from the Asia Cup,” Naqvi said in a social media post on Monday.
As per Cricbuzz, PCB has gone to the extent of withdrawing from their next group match of the tournament against UAE if their demands are not met.
Naqvi had also taken a shot at India, without taking their name, for “dragging politics into the game” after the Suryakumar Yadav-led side refused to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts.
“Utterly disappointing to witness the lack of sportsmanship today. Dragging politics into the game goes against the very spirit of sports. Let’s hope future victories are celebrated by all teams with grace,” Naqvi posted on X.
