Survey Shows Vast Majority of Spanish Residents Welcoming of International Tourists, Despite Protests

Despite recent tourism protests, the vast majority of Spanish residents support visitors coming to hotels, resorts, and local communities across Spain and the Canary Islands, a new survey from online travel agent On the Beach shows. On the Beach’s research found that Spanish residents overwhelmingly support visitors coming to their hotels, resorts and communities and recognise how vital tourists are to the local economy. More than three quarters (77%) of respondents said they have no problem with tourists visiting hotels in Spain or the Canary Islands. Despite the protests, only 7% said they are opposed to tourists staying in hotels. The Spanish study also found that over two thirds (69%) of Spanish residents say tourists are welcomed in their local area, and a huge 85% agree that the Spanish economy needs tourism. Zoe Harris, Chief Customer Officer at On the Beach, said: “The message from Spain is loud and clear, Spain needs tourists, Spain wants tourists. “Those taking part in the protests are in the minority. Irish holidaymakers remain absolutely vital to the communities and small businesses that rely on tourism.” Almost half (45%) of locals believe that businesses such as hotels, bars and shops have suffered because of the recent protests, which is one of the reasons On the Beach has launched a new campaign highlighting Spain’s ongoing welcome for visitors. According to the study, almost two thirds (65%) of Spanish residents are opposed to short-term rentals such as Airbnb, the key issue that has driven many of the recent demonstrations, as locals face higher housing costs and reduced availability of affordable homes. Zoe Harris continued: “The frustration we’ve seen on the streets isn’t directed at holidaymakers, it’s directed at government policies around housing and short-term rentals. “We’ve heard that locals are struggling with rising rents and a lack of affordable homes, and they want their government to take action on housing. “Tourism is not the enemy and communities across Spain and the Canary Islands want to welcome Irish holidaymakers with open arms. That’s why we’re standing with local businesses and residents to remind holidaymakers: Spain needs you, Spain wants you.” Despite the protests, Spanish destinations remain among the most popular choices for Irish sunseekers, with the mainland, Canary Islands and Balearics continuing to offer excellent value for winter sun and summer 2026 holidays.
