Copyright crikey

The Australian cultural sector experienced what passes for a win this week, with Attorney-General Michelle Rowland nixing the Productivity Commission’s recommended text and data mining (TDM) exemption to copyright law. This means that, for now, the Copyright Act stands. Technology companies that use Australian copyright material will be subject to the usual licensing arrangements. If they want to use Australian novels to teach their large-language models how to write, they’ll have to pay to do so. Or, at least, they will if they follow the law and the law is able to be enforced.
