Nigeria’s Super Eagles have dropped out of Africa’s top five in the latest FIFA Ranking, though they remain above South Africa in the continental standings.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have slipped out of Africa’s top five in the latest FIFA World Ranking, falling one spot to 45th in the world, though they remain ahead of South Africa in the continental standings.
The drop comes as a consequence of Nigeria’s disappointing performance during the most recent international window, where Super Eagles’ 2026 FIFA World Cup fate took a major blow.
The Super Eagles struggled with results against Rwanda, who they narrowly defeated in Uyo, before dropping two points to South Africa that saw them lose crucial ground among Africa’s elite teams.
As a result, they have been overtaken by AFCON holders Côte d’Ivoire, who have moved into the top five on the continent after earning 0.45 points compared to Nigeria, who lost 0.4 from the previous ranking.
In the last ranking as reported by Pulse Sports, the Super Eagles moved from 43rd to 44th, which was enough to keep Chelle and his team in the top five.
Despite this setback, Nigeria maintains a position above South Africa (55th) in the African ranking, reflecting a degree of continental strength even amid recent struggles.
The latest FIFA ranking reflects ongoing shifts within African football, where competition among national teams continues to intensify.
The Super Eagles will be looking to improve their standing in upcoming fixtures as they aim to climb back into the continent’s top tier and regain momentum ahead of future tournaments.
Meanwhile, in the global standing, Spain have replaced World Champions Argentina as the best nation after moving to the top of the standing.
France are second while Argentina sit third after dropping two spots, with England, unmoved in fourth and Porugal, the new entrance after overtaking Brazil, completing the top five.
