Sunderland have received a new verdict on Reinildo’s red card after the defender was dismissed for lashing out at Aston Villa’s Matty Cash in the first half. The Black Cats’ left-back had begun the match impressively but was shown the red card due to a moment of frustration during a tussle with the Villa defender. Reinildo was penalised for a foul following a late tackle from Villa defender Cash, but retaliated against the Polish international right under the fourth official’s watchful eye. The Sunderland defender argued with the officials on the pitch before finally exiting the field, while Black Cats’ midfielder Granit Xhaka also questioned the red card decision. Ex- Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher commended referee Sam Barrott for spotting the incident and sending off the Sunderland defender, reports Chronicle Live . Former Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd, who joined Gallagher on Sky Sports Ref Watch, labelled the incident as ‘ridiculous. ‘. The one-time England international commented: “It is ridiculous, you can see the frustration. Cash might have gone in slightly late, but it does not warrant that reaction and as soon as he has kicked up with his legs, he and everyone knows he is getting a red card. He let himself and the team down and it is poor from the player.” Gallagher added: “He [Sam Barrott] has done really good to keep his eye on the incident, he has not followed the ball and because he has not, he has picked it up – but why would a player do this?”. Sunderland proved themselves the superior side despite being reduced to ten men, yet were forced to battle back from a deficit to secure a point after Cash put the visitors ahead in the 67th minute. Villa netted their maiden Premier League goal of the campaign through his spectacular long-range effort from a short corner, with Robin Roefs powerless to prevent the ball finding the net despite getting a touch. Regis Le Bris’ men refused to buckle under the mounting pressure and struck back with a crucial leveller just eight minutes later as Wilson Isidor bagged his third goal of the top-flight season.
