SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) - Summerville Town Council has approved a sponsorship to launch a new STEM Lab with high-tech upgrades. The $55,000 commitment over five years from Home Telecom will fund gaming stations and hands-on learning tools for coding, music production, and esports at the Rollins Edwards Community Center. Summerville Director of Parks and Recreation Director Amy Evans called the lab an exciting step forward for the community. “By investing in both the technology and the programs to support it, Home Telecom is helping us create meaninfgul opportunities for residents of all ages, with a special emphasis on engaging and preparing teens for their future,” she said. The STEM lab will transform an existing multi-purpose room in the center into a “dynamic, technology-driven space” equipped with 10 fully-outfitted computer stations. Home Telecom said it will include ongoing support planned for the next five years. “We’re proud to support the next generation of innovators by investing in STEM education in the communities in which we live,” Home Telecom CEO William Helmly said. Construction is already underway, with the goal of engaging local youth in future-ready careers.
