By DaniRae Renno, pennlive.com (TNS) A deadly shooting at Lincoln University left students scrambling for information as the campus was put on lockdown. The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. Saturday and campus was on lockdown until around 1 a.m., but students interviewed by PennLive said the first notification of a lockdown they received from campus officials came in an email notifying them it had been lifted about 1:30 a.m. The University does have an emergency dispatch alert system that students can sign up for, but several students told PennLive they didn’t get any emails or texts about the shooting from the university. One person was killed and six people were injured in the shooting, the Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said in a press conference early Sunday morning. More people were injured in a crush of people running away from the shooting, he said. The shooting happened outside the International Cultural Center, where tables were set up for homecoming festivities. The public safety department is located in the center, and the chief of university police was just yards away when the shooting happened, the DA said. Students said they were holed up in buildings, checking on each other and trying to find out more information from friends on campus. The only information on social media from Lincoln University was a midnight post letting students know that counseling services would be available on Sunday. A group of students said they learned from their dorm builing groupchat that the building was locked down. Multiple gunmen suspected in Lincoln University shooting, Chester County DA says; man killed is identified One student said he was at the International Cultural Center when the shooting happened, although he didn’t hear gunshots. He said he saw people around him running, but didn’t realize the campus was on lock down until he tried to get food and found everything on campus locked up. A student told of seeing another student fall, resulting in a bloody nose, as she rushed get away from the site of the shooting. The shooting happened at an event called Yard Fest, which is part of the University’s homecoming festivities. Sororities, fraternities and social fellowships had tables set up at the events, along with other social organizations had tables. Lincoln University is one of the oldest historically black higher education institutions in the country. The DA said authorities arrested a person with a gun, but didn’t say that person was the shooter. Chester County detectives charged a 21-year-old with carrying a firearm without a license and put him in Chester County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail. Police didn’t dismiss the idea of multiple shooters. “We’re operating as if this is not an incident where someone came in with the design to inflict mass damage on a college campus,” de Barrena-Sarobe said. The campus was quiet on Sunday morning, although remnants of the homecoming celebration still lingered. Police were still processing the crime scene, campus police told PennLive. There is a small wooded area with trees that sits between the International Cultural Center and Baltimore Pike, the road that runs in front of the campus’s main entrance. A student said state police still had the road shut down at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, although it was open late Sunday morning. The International Cultural Center is tucked in the northwest corner of campus, next to the football stadium. A guard center leading into campus near the center was staffed and speaking with drivers of cars before they entered. ©2025 Advance Local Media LLC. Visit pennlive.com.
