Student loan amounts increased by 50%, interest rate slashed to 6%

The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) has announced sweeping reforms to Ghana’s student loan system as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s “Reset Agenda,” aimed at improving affordability, accessibility, and equity in higher education. In a statement signed Dr Saajida Shiraz, Chief Executive Officer of the SLTF on Friday, November 7, 2025, the reforms follow a directive from President Mahama for loan amounts to be revised and for measures to be implemented to make tertiary education more affordable. Among the new initiatives is the introduction of a “Students Loan Plus” package, which offers full fee coverage loans for tertiary students. According to the SLTF, “Tertiary students can now apply for the Students Loan Plus package, a component of the No Fees Stress Initiative, which provides tertiary students with full fee coverage loans disbursed directly to tertiary institutions.” Private sector must be seen as a partner, not a competitor – Alex Dadey The Trust has also increased the regular student loan amounts by 50 percent. “Consequently, loan amounts now range from GH¢2,250.00 to GH¢4,500.00 per academic year,” the statement said. In addition, the interest rate on student loans has been slashed from 12 percent annual compound interest to 6 percent simple interest during the study and moratorium period. The SLTF further announced that it has simplified the loan application process by scrapping the E-zwich requirement. “GCB Bank accounts for disbursement will now be created automatically within the No Fees Stress portal for all new applicants,” it added. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Education, the SLTF reaffirmed its commitment to promoting equitable access to affordable tertiary education across Ghana.
