Strong winds brought down a large tree near Larnaca’s Metropolitan Church area, causing power outages and damaging parked vehicles after the tree dragged down electricity poles.
The tree, located in the yard of an abandoned property, was uprooted by severe winds and struck Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) power lines, causing utility poles to collapse.
One electricity pole fell directly onto a car, causing serious damage, while other vehicles sustained minor damage from falling debris.
“The tree initially fell on electricity authority cables, causing the poles to collapse,” Christina Papadopoulou, EAC spokesperson, told Philenews. “EAC crews rushed to the scene as there is a power cut on that particular street and they are trying to repair the damage”.
No injuries have been reported from the incident, which occurred during a period of strong intermittent winds affecting the area.
Police responded to manage traffic diversions around the affected street, while the Fire Service deployed units to the area as a precautionary measure against potential fires. Larnaca Municipality crews took responsibility for removing the fallen tree from the roadway.
Fire Service officials confirmed that no other wind-related incidents had been recorded in Larnaca district by 2pm.
EAC engineers continue working to restore electricity supply to affected residents, though the authority has not provided an estimated timeframe for full power restoration.
