Strictly Come Dancing star Balvinder Sopal's life from EastEnders role to family

Balvinder Sopal is most recognised for playing Suki Panesar in BBC One’s EastEnders , but television audiences are set to see a different side of the actress as she embraces the challenge of Strictly Come Dancing . The 46-year-old soap favourite is among the 12 famous faces competing in this year’s instalment of the beloved dance programme, representing her debut foray into reality television. Balvinder, who first appeared in EastEnders during 2020, has described taking part in Strictly as a “dream”, and given her previous dance background, she appears poised to make her mark on the ballroom floor. Here, we delve into Balvinder’s personal and professional journey, exploring the programmes she’s featured in and details about her family life. Balvinder is a performer originating from Medway. She was born in Chatham and raised in Gillingham as the oldest of four siblings, reports Kent Live . Her sister, Manjeet Griffiths, has featured in numerous films and television programmes, including Holby City, and presently works as a producer for a London-based production company. Balvinder attended the University of Huddersfield, and currently lives in Medway, Kent. She has chosen not to reveal extensive details about her private affairs, opting to maintain personal information away from public scrutiny. Balvinder became part of the EastEnders ensemble in December 2019 as Suki Panesar. Her inaugural scenes were broadcast in January 2020 and she has continued as a mainstay character on the programme ever since. Suki has been central to numerous plotlines, including her relationship with Eve Unwin (Heather Peace), the tragic death of her son Jags (Amar Adatia), and the torment she endured from her estranged husband Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry). Balvinder’s performance as Suki has earned her a slew of award nominations, and last year she was crowned Soap Superstar at the Inside Soap Awards. Balvinder’s acting career began in 2001 with The Beautiful Violin at Oldham Coliseum Theatre. This led to her featuring in other stage productions like Absent Friends and Relatively Speaking. In the same year, Balvinder made her television debut in an episode of BBC’s Kidhaar!, playing the character Reena. She also lent her voice to Simran Kaur in the radio soap opera Silver Street on BBC Asian Network. Before joining EastEnders, Balvinder had roles in four other popular TV soaps: Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Doctors, and Hollyoaks between 2009 and 2018. She has also appeared in Call the Midwife and Waterloo Road, as well as films such as Anatomy of a Crime, Naachle London, and Honeycomb Lodge. Strictly Come Dancing is Balvinder’s first foray into reality TV, following her appearance on the game show Pointless earlier this year. Balvinder is amongst the stars who will be gracing the Strictly Come Dancing dance floor this year. She’s preparing to face off against competitors including Lewis Cope, Dani Dyer, Vicky Pattison, Ross King and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Discussing her place on Strictly, Balvinder revealed: “Being on Strictly is a dream that I held on to, with no proof that it would ever happen. “Working on EastEnders and being a part of Strictly Come Dancing is the stuff that dreams are made of. I’m far too excited to put into words how I feel but I’m incredibly excited at the prospect of dancing across the ballroom!” Strictly Come Dancing airs on BBC One on Saturday, 20 September at 6.40PM
