BROWNS – LIONS Matchup Preview
Using their dynamic defense and some special teams magic, the Browns (1-2) found a way to knock off the Packers amidst a grueling opening slate.
Cleveland’s defense has allowed the fewest yards per game, budging for just 204.3 yards. The next closest is the Atlanta Falcons, who have allowed 227.3. They also top the NFL in overall yards allowed with just 613 in three games.
Defensive end Myles Garrett, the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year, is making a strong case to reclaim his crown. He has nine solo tackles and four sacks, tied for second in the NFL.
On the other side, the offense continues to struggle. Cleveland is ranked 30th in the league in points per game (15.6). They have not scored more than 17 points in any game this season.
Quarterback Joe Flacco has had a rough to his second stint with the Browns. He has thrown for 631 yards and two touchdowns with four interceptions. Calls for rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel were somewhat quelled after the shocking the result in Week 3.
The offensive line is once again battling injuries, including the season-ending loss of offensive tackle Dawand Jones.
Rookie running back Quinshon Judkins continues to impress. He has 28 carries for 155 yards and one touchdown, averaging 5.5 yards per carry.
After a disastrous opener, kicker Andre Szmyt found redemption with a 55-yard walk-off field goal to stun the Packers. His foot will be busy if the Browns are going to keep pace with the Lions and have issues finding the endzone.
The Browns won the last rendition of the Battle of the Great Lakes, 13-10, back on Nov. 21.

The Lions (2-1) seemed to have snapped back into a powerhouse offense after a brief adjustment period to new offensive and defensive coordinators. They outlasted Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens, 38-30, on Sept. 22.
Detroit has put up 90 points in their last two weeks as opposed to the Browns’ 30 points in the same span.
The offense is guided by quarterback Jared Goff. He has thrown for 761 yards and seven touchdowns with one interception. His 79.4 QBR is the second-highest in the NFL, one of his many statistics that are near the top of the totem pole.
Goff has been surrounded by sensational pass protection, which has not allowed a sack in the last two weeks.
Goff has a plethora of playmakers at his disposal, including superstar receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. He has hauled in 20 receptions for 237 yards and four touchdowns, which is tied for the most in the NFL. St. Brown averages 11.9 yards per reception.
Jameson Williams is a speedster that has tallied eight receptions for 174 yards and one touchdown. He averages 21.8 yards per reception.
Tght end Sam LaPorta is often overlooked in such a loaded offense. The tight end is a valuable option for a Lions unit that is often humming down field. He has reeled in 13 receptions for 138 yards, averaging 10.6 yards per reception.
Detroit boasts an appropriately named Sonic and Knuckles backfield that can overwhelm most defenses. Jahmyr Gibbs is the flashier fit with 43 carries for 180 yards and three touchdowns, while David Montgomery is the bruising alternative that can impose his will. Montgomery has 34 carries for 233 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 6.9 yards per carry.
The Lions’ defense also showed its grit, sacking Jackson seven times in the thrilling win over the Ravens. Linebacker Jack Campbell has 26 combined tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.
Detroit is 19-6 against the Browns all-time. They have won four of the last five meetings.
