The Cavs came up short in their preseason opener, falling to the Bulls, 118-117, in what became an exhilarating contest inside Rocket Arena on Oct. 7.
When it comes to the preseason, wins and losses are often placed on the backburner in favor of the eye test and developmental opportunities. With that said, the Cavs have not won a preseason game since 2022 against the Atlanta Hawks, including last year’s winless campaign that warmed up what became a historic regular season.
Cleveland led most of the game despite letting the advantage slip away on a few occasions. Thomas Bryant missed a driving layup attempt that would have won the game in the final seconds.
DeAndre Hunter drew the start and was a featured piece in Kenny Atkinson’s offense, which could be a sign for further blueprints. He tallied a team-high tying 17 points and seven rebounds.
Guard Craig Porter Jr. impressed off the bench with a team-high tying 17 points, four rebounds and four assists. Rookie guard Tyrese Proctor looked comfortable in his debut with 14 points and two rebounds.
Evan Mobley, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, had 12 points and six rebounds in 18 minutes.
Seven Cavs played 18 minutes. All five starters played 18 minutes, including Donovan Mitchell, Jarett Allen and Jaylon Tyson.

The Bulls opened up the preseason with a gritty win against a foe that has had their number over the last couple of seasons in the regular season.
Rookie Matas Buzelis dazzled to lead all scorers with 19 points and eight rebounds, while power forward Zach Collins chipped in 16 points. Jevon Carter nabbed seven points in the final two minutes. Dalen Terry delivered the game-saving block in the final seconds. Chicago flashed their speed, something they hope will translate to the regular season and beyond.
The Bulls overcame a quick 17-6 deficit in the opening frame, tied it at 57 at halftime, and managed to claim a 70-64 lead midway through the third quarter. Cleveland retook the advantage, 90-83, heading into the fourth. That set up a frantic finish down the stretch featuring a slew of reserves with high-intensity possessions.
