Stranger Things season 5 begins later this month (November 26), and the cast is speaking out about their characters ahead of the final season, revolving around character Max’s fate. In an interview with SFX Magazine, actor Caleb McLaughlin, known for his role as Lucas Sinclair, spoke about the biggest question on everyone’s mind and which is Will Max wake up? McLaughlin addressed Lucas’s mental health during this tumultuous time and stated: "It affects Lucas a lot this season. In season four, when all that stuff happened to Max, he thinks it’s his fault because he could have helped her. I mean, he helped her – he saved her, in a way – but I feel like he has some internal guilt that he could have stopped it, or he could have helped her more." Max Mayfield (played by Sadie Sink) was introduced to Stranger Things in season 2, and Lucas’s relationship/infatuation with her character began. Lucas warned Max of the dangers hidden in Hawkins before confessing to what he and his group of friends had experienced and could potentially continue facing. Fast-forward to season 4 of Netflix’s hit series, and Max is experiencing PTSD after the death of her stepbrother, Billy. Her sadness and vulnerability led to her being targeted by Vecna and eventually becoming comatose due to his powers taking over her mind. McLaughlin continues and states how that impacts his character: "There’s a lot of trauma for him in that way. Someone that he loves and cares about, it was his task to look after her, and now she’s in the situation that she’s in. So that definitely affects him going into the new season." The new trailer for the final season of Stranger Things shows Lucas regularly with Max and even facing a demodog while carrying Max into what appears to be the hospital, becoming overrun with enemies. Vecna is unleashing his evil upon Hawkins, and it will be the showdown between all the characters, but it’s unclear if Max will survive.
