The Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah, has criticised the political class for failing to demonstrate the commitment needed to address the growing menace of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
According to her, successive governments have treated the fight against environmental destruction as a political tool rather than a national priority, leaving the country’s natural resources at risk.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, September 20, 2025, Madam Awula said: “If our ancestors had been as wicked as we are, we wouldn’t have come to meet the environment as we came to meet it. But we don’t believe the political will is there.”
Awula Serwah accused politicians of being inconsistent in their approach to the crisis, pointing out how calls for drastic measures, such as the declaration of a state of emergency, shift depending on which party is in power.
“In opposition, people were lining up for the declaration of a state of emergency. Now, we others who are in opposition are asking for it. But the question is, if that is needed, why didn’t you declare one when you were there?” she questioned.
She urged leaders to put aside political rivalry and take decisive action to save the country’s forests, rivers, and farmlands.
“The time has come to stop politicising this issue and look at what we are doing to stop this ecocide,” she added.
